For the first time in a long time I was awoken by one of my kitties. I wasn’t able to get back to sleep, and needless-to-say was totally exhausted the entire day. That probably made the barrage of Twitter tweets that I received even harder to take. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the exposure that I get, and I love meeting new people. In the past twenty-four hours, I’ve seen some of the most interesting Internet content ever because of some of the folks that have started following me (and who I returned the love by following as well). Given some sleep, I’m sure the new-found Twitter attention will be 100% joy.
The barrage happened for a couple of reasons. First, I got involved with a Twitter pyramid marketing deal that has allowed me to gain a lot of followers quickly. You can check it out here: http://tweetergetter.com/bsodmyself
The other thing that helped me gain a lot of followers was that Tom over at Kn@appster made me one of his #FollowFriday tweets. Pete Cashmore, CEO of Mashable gives a great overview of #FollowFriday:
1. Hashtags are used to identify a topic on Twitter. Add # to the front of a word to make it a topic.
2. #followfriday is a game in which people suggest who to follow on Twitter. It helps everyone find interesting Tweeps. You list the users you recommend following and add “#followfriday” so people can find your tweet.
3. You can find everyone’s #followfriday suggestions here: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23followfriday
Pete (@mashable) is definitely someone I recommend following, since he posts a lot of interesting articles on social media. I have learned a tremendous amount from these posts, and you will too.
My first exposure to Twitter almost made me pass on the whole thing. I watched the following Lisa Nova YouTube video (part one of at least a two part series):
I nearly lose control of my bodily functions everytime I watch that video. Hopefully you won’t receive too many “I stubbed my toe” tweets while on Twitter, but oddly enough, while watching the countdown to UNIX epoch time reaching 1234567890, I received a tweet saying that one of my fellow revelers in the event (@shellyroche) tweeted that she fell down the stairs and broke her knee. Damn, I thought, now that is extreme hardcore tweetering. Speaking of, Shelly offers one of the best introductions to Tweeter that I have seen thusfar on episode two of her show, Bytestyle:
So now you should know what Twitter is about, so go out there and get to it. And, oh yeah, don’t forget to follow me.
